Compress video
Reduce video file size to share on WhatsApp, by email, or on social media.
First, find out what's taking up space
- Android: Settings › Storage shows how much space apps, photos and videos, audio, documents, and the system use. On many devices, Google’s Files app or the manufacturer’s file manager suggests items to clean up.
- iPhone: Settings › General › iPhone Storage lists apps from largest to smallest and offers recommendations.
The biggest space hogs are usually videos, WhatsApp (especially media from group chats), social media apps with large caches, and apps you installed but don’t use.
WhatsApp: the hidden space hog
Every video, photo, sticker, and audio file from each group chat is saved on your phone. Here’s how to clean things up carefully:
- In WhatsApp, open Settings › Storage and data › Manage storage.
- Review files larger than 5 MB and frequently forwarded files (chain messages and group memes). Select and delete anything you don’t need.
- Check which chats use the most space—usually group chats. You can delete media from a chat without deleting its messages.
- Turn off automatic media downloads under Storage and data so group chats don’t fill up your phone again.
Photos and videos: remove them from your phone without deleting them
- Google Photos: Once backup is turned on and complete, the Free up space option removes copies from your device that are already saved to the cloud. They’ll still be available in the app over the internet. Check your available Google account storage first.
- iPhone with iCloud Photos: Go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Photos and turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to keep smaller versions on your device and the originals in iCloud.
- Computer or external hard drive: Copy photos over with a cable, make sure they open on your computer, and only then delete them from your phone. Keep irreplaceable files in two places.
Large videos: compress them instead of deleting them
A few minutes of 4K video can take up several gigabytes. To keep family videos on your phone without needing cinema-quality resolution, use Compress video to significantly reduce the file size to 1080p or 720p while keeping it looking good on your phone screen. Save the original on your computer or in the cloud, and keep only the compressed version on your phone.
The same goes for very large photos other people send you: Compress image reduces the file size while preserving visual quality. For your own original photos, cloud backup is a better choice because it preserves their quality.
Going forward, consider recording in 1080p instead of 4K for everyday videos. The difference on your phone screen is small, but the space savings are significant.
Apps and cache
- Apps you don’t use: Uninstall them. On iPhone, Offload Unused Apps removes the app but keeps its data so you can reinstall it later.
- Cache: On Android, go to Settings › Apps › [app] › Storage and tap Clear cache to remove temporary files without deleting your account. Avoid “Clear data,” which resets the app.
- Downloaded music and shows in streaming apps: remove downloads you’ve already listened to or watched.
- Downloads folder: PDFs, installers, and forgotten files can pile up there.
Beware of miracle-cleaner apps
Apps that promise to “speed up” or “clean” your phone with one tap often do little more than your system’s built-in tools, show lots of ads, and sometimes ask for excessive permissions. Stick with tools from your device, Google, or Apple. Before doing a major cleanup, make sure your WhatsApp and photo backups are up to date.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the system use so much space?
The operating system, updates, and temporary files take up a fixed amount of space that you can’t free up yourself. This amount grows a little with updates.
Does freeing up space in Google Photos delete my photos?
It removes only copies from your device that are already backed up to the cloud. They’ll remain in the app and your Google account. However, if you delete a photo in the app, it’s also deleted from the cloud.
Does deleting WhatsApp media delete the chat?
No. If you use Manage storage, the files are removed but the text messages stay.
Does a memory card help?
Yes, if your Android phone has a memory card slot: you can move photos, videos, and music to the card. iPhones don’t support memory cards.
Is it safe to compress video in a browser?
Yes. The video is compressed right on your device and isn’t uploaded to any servers.
