About this tool
How each count works
- Words: sequences of letters or numbers. Hyphenated or apostrophe-connected words count as one ("mother-in-law," "don't").
- Characters: everything, including spaces and line breaks. Characters without spaces excludes spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
- Sentences: sections ending with a period, question mark, exclamation point, or ellipsis.
- Paragraphs: blocks separated by a blank line.
- Speaking time: estimated at 130 words per minute, a relaxed presentation pace.
Common word and character limits
| Text type | Guideline |
|---|---|
| College application essay | Check the application instructions for the word or character limit. |
| Research paper abstract | Requirements vary by publication or institution, so check the guidelines for your submission. |
| 3-minute speech or pitch | About 390 words at a pace of 130 words per minute. |
Word counts are only an estimate for handwritten text. Copy a paragraph by hand, count how many words fit on each line in your handwriting, and use that average to estimate the full text.
Use frequent words to revise your writing
The list skips articles and prepositions and shows your ten most repeated words. If "very," "thing," or the same verb appears several times, replace some instances with synonyms or rewrite the sentence. To check exact social media limits, use the character counter.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can you use in a post?
Common limits: X (Twitter), 280; Google meta description, ~155; SEO title, ~60; Instagram bio, 150.
How is reading time calculated?
We use an average of 200 words per minute for silent reading in English.
Is the text I paste saved?
It stays only in your browser session, so it won’t be lost if you reload the page. It isn’t sent to a server and disappears when you close the tab.
Why does Word show a different word count?
Every program has its own rules for hyphens, numbers, links, and symbols. Small differences in long texts are normal; for strict limits, use the count from the tool your institution requires.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
