About this tool
What changes in your text
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| acción, corazón | accion, corazon |
| São Paulo — Pará | Sao Paulo — Para |
| pão, mãe, avô, você | pao, mae, avo, voce |
| Straße, Æsir, Ørsted | Strasse, aesir, orsted |
Uppercase and lowercase are preserved (Ç becomes C, é becomes e). Spaces, line breaks, and punctuation stay as they are unless you choose to remove symbols.
When to remove accents
- Importing spreadsheets and CSV files: legacy systems and some banking file formats accept only ASCII characters. A character like "ç" may turn into "ç" or cause the import to fail.
- File and folder names used with servers, email, or other operating systems—accents are a common cause of broken links.
- Logins, email addresses, and codes: names like "jose.conceicao" are easier to type without confusion.
- Comparing lists: "José" and "Jose" become identical, making it easier to find duplicates.
Keep accents in text people will read: they can change the meaning of words (avó/avô, pôr/por, é/e).
How accent removal works
The tool uses Unicode NFD normalization, which splits each accented letter into a base letter and a mark (á = a + ´), then removes the marks. This also works with accents from other languages, such as ü, ñ, å, and ě. To create page URLs, use the slug generator, which also replaces spaces with hyphens and converts everything to lowercase.
Frequently asked questions
Does Excel have a formula to remove accents?
There’s no built-in function. You’d need to chain multiple SUBSTITUTE formulas (one for each accented letter) or use a macro. Pasting the column here, copying the result, and pasting it back is usually faster.
Why does my text show ç and ã instead of ç and ã?
This is a character encoding error (the file was saved as UTF-8 and opened as Latin-1, or vice versa), not leftover accents. The best fix is to reopen the file with the correct encoding. Remove accents as a workaround when the destination system doesn’t accept UTF-8.
Does this tool remove emojis?
Only if you check the option to remove symbols and punctuation. Otherwise, it removes only accents and leaves the rest of your text unchanged.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
