How to use: Edit PDF

  1. Choose a PDF. Its pages appear as thumbnails beside it (on your phone, tap Pages).
  2. With Edit text, click anywhere in the PDF and type over the existing text. The font, size, and color are detected automatically.
  3. Use the other tools to add new text, erase, highlight, draw, or insert shapes, an image, a signature, a link, a form field, or a note. Drag to move an item, use the handle to resize it, and press Ctrl+Z to undo.
  4. Rotate, delete, or reorder pages using the thumbnails, then click Save edited PDF to download your file.

About this tool

How editing existing text works: The editor reads the position of each word on the page and groups the text into lines. When you click a line, it measures the font size, samples the text and background colors from the page pixels, and picks the closest standard font (with or without serifs, bold, or italic). When you save, the old characters are replaced with a same-size space inside the PDF itself—the rest of the page stays exactly the same, byte for byte—and the new text is written on the same baseline. Accented characters work in all fonts.

Everything you can do on one screen: Add text with your choice of font, size, color, bold, and italic; erase with a rectangle in any color; highlight; draw freehand; add a rectangle, ellipse, line, or arrow with your choice of color, stroke width, and fill; add an image or signature (drawn, typed, or from a photo); add links to websites or other pages; add text fields and checkboxes to create a fillable form; and add notes (comments). Select, move, resize, or delete any item, with unlimited undo and redo. Your file never leaves your device.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change text that's already in a PDF?

Yes. Select Edit text and click the text you want to change. It becomes an editable field in the same place, with the original size and color. When you save, the old text is removed from the page content (it isn't just hidden), and the new text is added in the same position. If the original font is embedded in the PDF, the editor uses the closest standard font (Helvetica, Times, or Courier) and lets you know.

Does the erase box actually remove the information?

The Erase tool visually covers the text, but the content underneath remains in the file. To truly remove text, use Edit text and delete it. Images and sensitive information inside images are only permanently removed by running the PDF through Flatten PDF, which converts the pages to images.

Does it work with large PDFs and on a phone?

Yes. Only the pages currently on screen are rendered, so PDFs with hundreds of pages open without freezing. On your phone, the toolbar is compact, you can pinch to zoom, and you can open the thumbnails by tapping Pages. PDFs that require an opening password must first be processed with Unlock PDF.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device, and not a single byte is sent over the internet. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
