About this tool
How to get better recognition results
- Take the photo straight on, with the paper filling the image and no shadow from your hand or phone.
- Use even lighting: a spot near a window works better than flash, which can create a bright spot in the middle.
- Use sufficient resolution: small letters need more pixels. For scanners, 300 DPI is the most common setting for OCR.
- Choose the right language: the Portuguese model recognizes accents and cedilla; for mixed-language text, choose Portuguese + English.
- Crop out anything that isn’t text (photos, logos, table edges) with image cropper.
Text only or searchable PDF?
Text only gives you text to copy and a .txt file. Text + searchable PDF also creates a PDF with the original image and an invisible text layer on top. The document looks the same, but you can search for words (Ctrl+F) and select passages. It’s the best choice for archiving scanned documents. If you already have a multi-page scanned PDF, the PDF OCR tool is made for that.
What OCR doesn’t handle well
Tables may lose their column alignment (the text comes out line by line), and mathematical formulas and curved text often contain errors. Cursive handwriting is also less accurate. Check important numbers—account numbers, amounts, and dates—before using the extracted text.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with screenshots?
Yes—screenshots usually produce great results. You can paste a screenshot directly on this page with Ctrl+V.
Can it recognize handwriting?
Handwriting recognition is less accurate. The tool works best with printed or typed text.
What OCR technology does it use?
Text recognition is powered by Tesseract, an open-source OCR engine that runs in your browser. The language model downloads the first time you use it and is then cached; your images stay on your device.
Can I extract text from multiple images at once?
Yes. Select multiple images (or a PDF), and they’ll be processed in order. The text from each one appears separately with a numbered marker.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. This tool runs entirely in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device, and not a single byte is sent over the internet. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
