About this tool
The “magic number” 7
Short-term memory—the kind you use to hold a phone number while dialing—has limited capacity. In digit-span tests, most adults remember about 7 items, give or take 2. With colors, which are harder to “say in your head,” scores are usually a little lower.
This test is based on digit-span tests: the sequence starts with 3 items and grows by one after each correct answer. It’s a fun way to practice your attention, not a neuropsychological assessment.
Tips to get a higher score
- Chunk the numbers: 4-7-1-9-2-6 becomes “471” and “926,” like a phone number.
- Repeat the sequence in your head as each item appears, either quietly out loud or silently.
- Make up a story: for colors, create a short story (“red like a stop sign, blue like the sea…”).
Then test your reflexes with the reaction time test.
Frequently asked questions
How many numbers can the average person memorize?
About 7 digits on average, with most adults remembering 5 to 9. Remembering more than 9 is well above average and often involves techniques like grouping digits into chunks.
Can I enter the numbers with spaces or commas?
Yes. Only the digits count, so 4 7 1, 4-7-1, and 471 are all accepted as the same answer.
Does the color mode only work with a keyboard?
Yes. Press 1 (red), 2 (blue), 3 (yellow), and 4 (green), or use Tab to navigate and press Enter. Each button is also labeled with its color.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
