How to use: Compare Texts

  1. Paste the original version on the left and the modified version on the right.
  2. Choose to compare line by line (code, lists) or word by word (essays, contracts).
  3. Added text is highlighted in green, and removed text in red.

About this tool

The comparison uses the longest common subsequence (LCS) algorithm, the same principle behind the diff tool used by programmers: it finds the largest set of lines or words that stayed the same and marks the rest as added or deleted.

Use the options to ignore differences in capitalization and extra spaces when only the content matters. Everything happens in your browser: your text isn't sent to any server.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between comparing by line and by word?

By line, any change highlights the entire line—ideal for code, lists, and spreadsheets. By word, the tool highlights only the changed words within a paragraph, making it better for essays and contracts.

Is there a size limit?

Texts with thousands of lines work well. Very long word-by-word comparisons with many differences may exceed the memory limit. If that happens, compare by line or work in smaller sections.

Are my texts saved?

No. The comparison runs in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
