About this tool
Adding hours in your head can be tricky because an hour has 60 minutes, not 100: 8h50 + 1h20 = 10h10, not 9h70. The calculator does the math in minutes and shows the result as HH:MM and in decimal hours (8h30 = 8.5 hours), a format used for payroll and spreadsheets.
When calculating the difference between times, if the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator accounts for crossing midnight (22:00 to 06:00 = 8 hours). For time card entries, each day has a positive or negative balance compared with the scheduled work hours. To calculate the value of overtime pay, use the overtime calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add the result to the hours: 7h45 = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75 hours. To convert back, multiply the decimal part by 60: 8.2 hours = 8h12.
How do you calculate work hours with a lunch break?
On the “Time card” tab, enter clock-in and clock-out times in pairs, such as 08:00-12:00 13:00-17:48. The calculator adds up your work periods and automatically subtracts the breaks between them.
Can the calculator handle shifts that go past midnight?
Yes. For both time differences and time card entries, an end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
