Details that make a difference in English
- In Title Case, short articles, prepositions, and conjunctions (a, an, the, and, in, on, to, with, by…) stay lowercase unless they begin the title: "The Lord of the Rings," not "The Lord Of The Rings."
- In Sentence case, only the first letter after a period, question mark, exclamation point, or line break is capitalized. Proper names in the middle of a sentence are lowercased—check acronyms and names after converting.
- Accents and special characters are preserved in every option.
English capitalization conventions vary by style guide. In titles, major words are usually capitalized in title case, while sentence case capitalizes only the first word and proper names.
Frequently asked questions
How do I capitalize the first letter of every word?
Choose Title Case. It capitalizes the first letter of each word and keeps short connecting words like of, and, and in lowercase, as is common for names and addresses.
I typed everything with Caps Lock on. How do I fix it?
If the capitalization is reversed (lIKE tHIS), choose iNVERT case. If everything is uppercase, choose Sentence case, then adjust proper names and acronyms.
