PDF to Word

Convert a PDF into an editable Word document (.docx) with paragraphs, headings, and bold text.

Open tool

Step-by-step (computer or phone)

  1. Open PDF to Word.
  2. Select your PDF. It's processed right in your browser: nothing is uploaded to a server—not a bank statement or a contract.
  3. Choose Editable text (to change the content) or Exact layout (to preserve the page's original design).
  4. Click Convert to Word, then open the .docx file in Word, LibreOffice, or Google Docs.

Why the results sometimes look different

A PDF doesn't store paragraphs. It stores pieces of text in fixed positions on the page, like a vector image. To turn it into a Word document, the converter has to guess where each paragraph, heading, and list begins. This works very well for documents with continuous text (contracts, papers, and letters), but it has some limitations:

  • Tables and columns may become a series of paragraphs. For tables, copy the content from the PDF into a spreadsheet or use Exact layout mode.
  • Fonts are replaced with Calibri if the original font isn't on your computer; font size and bold formatting are preserved.
  • Forms and text boxes may lose their exact positioning.

No converter—not even paid ones—preserves the layout perfectly every time. The difference here is that you can see the limitations upfront, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Scanned PDF? Run OCR first

If your PDF came from a scanner or a photo, it's just an image: there's no text to edit, and the pages are added to Word as pictures. Here's what to do:

  1. Run the file through PDF OCR to recognize the text.
  2. Convert the searchable PDF it creates using PDF to Word.

Quick way to tell if a PDF is scanned: try selecting a word in your PDF reader. If you can't select it, it's an image.

Only need the text?

If formatting doesn't matter (for example, if you're pasting into an email or ChatGPT), PDF to Text is faster and gives you plain text. After editing it in Word, convert it back to PDF with Word to PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free? Are there any limits?

Yes—it's free, with no sign-up, no watermark, and no file limits. The only limitation is your device's memory when working with very large PDFs.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. PDF to Word conversion happens entirely in your browser. You can even turn off your internet connection after opening the page.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF asks for a password to open, you'll need that password. If it only blocks editing or copying, use the PDF unlock tool first.
