Why your photo looks worse

To save data and storage space, WhatsApp reduces and recompresses photos sent the usual way. You may not notice the difference on your phone's screen, but it becomes clear when someone zooms in, prints the photo, or uses it for a project: details disappear, artifacts show up in skies and smooth backgrounds, and small text gets blurry.

Here are three ways to reduce or avoid this loss of quality.

Option 1: Send in HD

Recent versions of WhatsApp have an HD quality option:

  1. Select the photo as usual.
  2. On the editing screen, tap the HD button at the top and choose HD quality.
  3. Send it.

The photo is still compressed, but at a higher resolution. This is the best option for photos someone will view on a phone. Go to Settings › Storage and data › Media upload quality to set HD as the default, if it's available in your version.

Option 2: Send as a document

When you send it as a document, the file is sent exactly as it is, with no compression:

  1. In the chat, tap the paperclip (Android) or the + (iPhone), then choose Document.
  2. Find the photo: on Android, look in Gallery or your folders; on iPhone, tap Choose Photo or Video.
  3. Send it. The recipient gets the original file, which they need to download and open.

This is the right choice for photos that will be printed, edited, sent to a print shop, or used for a job application. Note: sending a photo as a document also includes its metadata, including its location. See how to remove location data from photos if that's a concern.

Sending iPhone photos to Android or Windows users

iPhone photos sent as documents are sent in their original format, usually HEIC, which many older Android devices and Windows computers can't open. If the recipient can't view the photo, convert it first with HEIC to JPG, then send the JPG as a document. The quality stays the same, and the file opens anywhere.

Option 3: Send multiple photos at once in a ZIP file

Sending photos one by one as documents is tedious if you're sharing an event album, 50 photos of a property, or photos for a project. Combine them into a single file with Create ZIP, then send the ZIP as a document. The recipient can extract it on a phone or computer and get all the photos in their original quality. Photos are already compressed, so a ZIP won't reduce their size much; the benefit is convenience.

If the ZIP file is too large for WhatsApp, upload it to a cloud storage service (Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud) and share the link.

When reducing file size is better

The original isn’t always the best option. If you’re sending photos to a form with a file size limit, to someone with little storage space on their phone, or over a limited internet connection, a smaller photo is more considerate. Compress image reduces file size while letting you control the quality, instead of leaving compression up to the app.

Which option to use in each situation

  • Everyday photos to view on a phone: send normally or in HD.
  • Photos to print, frame, or put in an album: send as a document.
  • Photos of an ID or other document for an application: send as a document, preferably as a PDF, so the text stays clear.
  • Product photos for an online store or listing: send as a document or ZIP file so the person posting them has the best quality possible.
  • Party photos for family: share a folder link so everyone can download the photos they want.

Frequently asked questions

Does sending a photo in HD keep it exactly like the original?

Not exactly. The photo is still compressed, but it keeps much more of its original resolution than a standard send. To send the identical file, send it as a document.

Does sending a photo as a document use more data?

Yes, because the file is larger. If you have a limited mobile data plan, use Wi-Fi to send and download lots of original files.

Do videos lose quality too?

Yes, for the same reason. The same options apply to videos: use HD quality when available or send the video as a document.

Why doesn’t a photo sent as a document appear in the recipient’s gallery?

Documents stay in the chat and in WhatsApp’s Documents folder. The recipient needs to open the file and save it to their gallery if they want to.

Do photos in Status lose quality too?

Yes, Status photos are compressed too. Sending them at the right size and aspect ratio (vertical, 1080 pixels wide) helps reduce quality loss.

Does WhatsApp Web send photos at higher quality?

Not necessarily. The compression rules are similar. On a computer, though, it’s easier to drag and drop files as documents, which preserves the original.
