Trim video
Trim the beginning and end of MP4, MOV, and WEBM videos by selecting a section in the preview.
Why WhatsApp Status Trims Your Video
WhatsApp Status supports short videos for each post. If you choose a video that’s longer than the limit, the app opens an editor and asks you to select a clip, or, in some versions, splits the video into parts. The limit may change with updates; the editor shows how much you can include.
The problem is that the in-app editor is small and imprecise: it’s easy to cut off the first word someone says or the most important moment. Trimming the video beforehand with an editor that lets you set precise markers gives you more control.
Option 1: Choose the best clip
- Watch the video and note the times when the important part starts and ends.
- Open Trim video and select your file.
- Enter the start and end times (in minutes:seconds) or mark them in the preview.
- Leave half a second before the first word: trimming too close can cut off the first syllable.
- Download the clip and post it to your Status. Since it’s already the right length, the app won’t trim anything else.
Option 2: Split the video into parts in order
To share a full video (a speech, presentation, or recipe), split it into consecutive clips:
- In Trim video, create the first clip (from the beginning to the limit), then the second (from where the first ended to the next limit), and so on.
- End each clip at a natural pause in the speech, even if that makes it a little shorter. Cutting in the middle of a sentence can feel like a mistake.
- Post the clips in order, starting with part 1. Status posts appear in the order they’re published.
More than three or four clips can be tiring to watch. If the video is very long, post a short clip and say where to watch the full version.
Option 3: Speed it up
Videos without important speech, such as a craft tutorial, a renovation, or a scenic view, can look great sped up. Speed up or slow down video lets you make a video 1.5×, 2×, 3×, or 4× faster and remove the audio, which would sound distorted. A 2-minute video at 4× speed becomes 30 seconds.
Video quality on Status
WhatsApp recompresses Status videos. For the best results:
- Use vertical video (9:16) to fill the screen.
- If the file is very large, reduce its size first with Compress video at 720p and medium quality. Surprisingly, uploading an already optimized file often looks better than letting the app compress a 4K video.
- Post with a strong connection. On a poor network, the upload may use lower quality.
- If your WhatsApp media settings offer an upload quality option, choose the highest setting.
Status privacy
Your Status is visible to people in your contacts, depending on your privacy settings. Go to Settings › Privacy › Status to choose whether to share with all your contacts, all except selected people, or only selected people. Before posting a video with children, your home, or other people in it, check who can see it.
Example: a 3-minute video of a school performance
A parent recorded their daughter’s 3-minute dance performance and wants to share it with family on Status.
- Watch the video and identify three moments: the entrance onto the stage, the main part of the routine, and the final bow.
- In Trim video, create a short clip of each moment, leaving one second before and after.
- Compress all three clips to 720p because the original was recorded in 4K.
- Post them in order, with a simple caption on the first one.
- In your Status privacy settings, make the posts visible only to family contacts.
Share the full video as a document in the family group for anyone who wants to watch the whole thing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I post a YouTube video to Status?
You can share a link to the video on Status. Downloading YouTube videos to repost goes against the service’s terms and may violate copyright.
Why does my video look low quality on Status?
WhatsApp recompresses videos. Upload vertical video at 720p or 1080p over a strong connection, and avoid videos that have already been compressed multiple times.
Is it safe to trim a video in my browser?
Yes. The video is trimmed right on your device and isn’t uploaded to any servers.
Can I add music to a video on Status?
WhatsApp's editor has features that vary by version. For more control, edit the video in a video editing app before posting.
Does trimming a video reduce its quality?
Trimming preserves the quality of the selected clip. Any quality loss you notice in your status is caused by WhatsApp recompressing the video.
