WEBP to JPG

Open tool

What’s going on

You right-click an image, choose Save image as, and instead of a JPG, you get a .webp file. Then it won’t open in your usual program, a form won’t accept it, or you can’t attach it.

There’s nothing wrong with your computer. Websites started serving images in WEBP because the format is smaller, which helps pages load faster and uses less mobile data. Your browser downloads exactly what the website sends, so you get a WEBP file.

Why some programs can’t open WEBP

WEBP is relatively new compared with JPG, which has been around since the early 1990s. All current browsers display WEBP, but:

  • Older editing and image-viewing programs may not recognize the format.
  • Upload forms and business and government systems often accept only JPG, PNG, and PDF.
  • Some phone apps and printing services don’t support WEBP.

On updated systems, the built-in photo viewer can usually open WEBP files. If yours can’t, the easiest way is to drag the file into a browser tab.

How to convert WEBP to JPG or PNG

  1. Open WEBP to JPG for photos or WEBP to PNG for logos, icons, and images with transparent backgrounds.
  2. Select one or more WEBP files.
  3. Convert and download. The result will open in any program and work with upload forms.

Choose PNG if the image has transparency: JPG doesn’t support transparent backgrounds and will fill them with a solid color.

Want to check an image’s dimensions in pixels and file size before using it? View image size and details shows you this information and confirms the file’s actual format, even if the extension is incorrect.

Tips for downloading images in a different format

  • Look for the website’s own download option. Stock photo sites and social networks often offer the original JPG or PNG file through a download button, separate from the image displayed on the page.
  • Open the image in a new tab. Sometimes the image URL ends with something like ?format=webp or .webp. Changing the end of the URL to .jpg works on some sites, but not all.
  • Copy and paste: When you copy the image (right-click › Copy image) and paste it into an editor or document, it’s inserted as a regular image, regardless of the file format.
  • Take a screenshot: A last resort. It always works, but reduces image quality and captures only what’s on screen.

Be mindful of usage rights

Being able to download an image doesn’t mean you can use it freely. Photos and illustrations on websites, in news articles, and on social media belong to their creators and are protected by copyright law. For personal use, such as saving a recipe or showing it to someone, there’s usually no practical issue. For publishing, selling, or using an image in your business materials, choose a stock image site with a free license or ask for permission.

What if the image is an AVIF?

Some sites already use AVIF, which is even smaller than WEBP. The problem and solution are the same: convert it to JPG before using it in programs or forms that don’t support the format. AVIF to JPG converts the file for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting WEBP to JPG reduce image quality?

Very little. The image is compressed again, but at a high quality setting, the difference is imperceptible. For no quality loss, convert it to PNG instead, but keep in mind that the file will be larger.

Can I just rename the file with a .jpg extension?

No. The extension is just part of the filename; the file itself is still WEBP. Some programs may open it anyway, but forms and other apps may reject it or show an error.

Is WEBP safe? Can it contain a virus?

WEBP is an image format, like JPG and PNG. Follow the same precautions you always do: keep your browser and operating system updated, and be wary of files that claim to be images but have extensions like .exe or .scr.

Can I convert multiple WEBP files at once?

Yes. Select all the files in the converter, and you’ll get the results in a batch.

Why does a saved image appear normally in my phone’s gallery?

Current Android and iPhone galleries display WEBP images without any problem. Issues usually come up later, when you attach the image to a form, open it in an editing app, or send it to print. In those cases, convert it first.
