Count characters and see how many you have left before reaching the limit on Instagram, X, TikTok, YouTube, SMS, and Google.
On X, links count as 23 characters and emojis as 2—we use this rule for the X limit. Other limits count visible characters.

About this tool
Unlike a word counter, this page focuses on limits: each bar shows how much of a platform’s available space you’ve used and changes color as you get close to the limit. Combined emojis (like 👍🏽) count as one visible character, and UTF-8 bytes are useful when a system limits field size.
For SMS, the tool detects whether your message fits the GSM alphabet (160 characters) or whether accents and emojis require Unicode encoding, which lowers the limit to 70 characters per message.
Frequently asked questions
How many characters can an Instagram caption have?
Up to 2,200 characters in a caption and 150 in a bio. Only the first few lines show before “more,” so put the most important details up front.
What’s the ideal length for a Google title and meta description?
As a rule of thumb, aim for about 60 characters for the title and 155 to 160 for the description. Google truncates based on pixel width, so these are estimates.
Why does X count my text differently?
X counts every link as 23 characters and emojis and Asian characters as 2. The X counter on this tool already applies these rules.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
