At 256 colors, the appearance barely changes. Illustrations and logos usually look great with 32 to 64.
Smooths gradients by mixing dots of similar colors. Use 0 for logos with solid colors.

About this tool

How lossy PNG compression works

PNG is a lossless format, so it can only shrink a file by finding repeated pixel patterns. That's why images with gradients, shadows, or smooth edges can have large file sizes. This tool uses color quantization: it analyzes every color in the image, selects the most representative ones using the median cut method, refines the selection with k-means, and redraws each pixel using the closest color in the palette.

The result is saved as an indexed PNG (up to 8 bits per pixel, or 1, 2, and 4 bits when there are fewer colors), with an opacity table (tRNS) to preserve transparent backgrounds and maximum-level deflate compression. It opens in any browser, editor, WordPress, Shopify, or app, just like a regular PNG.

Tips for the smallest file

  • Screenshots and charts: 64 to 128 colors, low dithering.
  • Logos and icons: 16 to 32 colors, no dithering for solid colors.
  • Product cutouts with transparent backgrounds: 256 colors with 60% to 80% dithering.
  • Is the image larger than the screen it will appear on? Set a maximum width (for example, 1600 px) to save even more.

Frequently asked questions

Why do PNG files get so much smaller?

A standard PNG can store up to 16 million colors per pixel (4 bytes each). This tool groups similar colors into a palette of up to 256, so each pixel uses 1 byte or less. The difference is barely noticeable, but screenshots and illustrations can shrink by 60% to 80%.

Is PNG transparency preserved?

Yes—even the soft, semitransparent edges of cutouts and logos. Each palette color has its own opacity, just like PNG-8 with an alpha channel, which professional optimization tools use.

When is this type of PNG compression not worth it?

For detailed photos, JPG or WEBP will be much smaller than any PNG. If your photo doesn't need transparency, use PNG to JPG or compress image. If the file is already optimized, we'll keep the original.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. This tool runs entirely in your browser: your file is read and processed on your device, and not a single byte is sent over the internet. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
