Title-to-slug examples
| Title | Slug |
|---|---|
| How to Make Grilled Cheese in 30 Minutes | how-to-make-grilled-cheese-in-30-minutes |
| (same title, without short words) | make-grilled-cheese-30-minutes |
| Nike Air Sneakers — Size 10 (Black) | nike-air-sneakers-size-10-black |
| Questions? Get in touch! | questions-get-in-touch |
The generator removes accents, converts everything to lowercase, replaces any sequence of spaces and symbols with a single separator, and removes separators from the beginning and end.
Slug best practices
- Use hyphens, not underscores. Google Search Central's URL structure documentation recommends using hyphens (-) to separate words instead of underscores (_).
- Keep it short and descriptive. "/vacation-calculator" tells you more than "/page?id=8231" and fits in a search result.
- Avoid dates and numbers that will become outdated ("best-phones-2024") if you plan to update the same content.
- Don't change the slug of a published page without setting up a 301 redirect from the old address to the new one. Otherwise, existing links and search rankings will point to a 404 page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a slug?
A slug is the readable final part of a URL that identifies a page, such as "how-to-make-grilled-cheese" in site.com/recipes/how-to-make-grilled-cheese. WordPress, Shopify, and other CMS platforms use this name in the link editor.
Do ç and ã stay in the URL?
They become c and a. Browsers accept accented characters in URLs, but encode them when sending them (%C3%A7), making links harder to read when copied. That's why slugs typically use unaccented letters, numbers, and hyphens.
Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?
It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
