About this tool

There are seven symbols: I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), and M (1,000). They’re added from left to right, from largest to smallest — VIII = 8. When a smaller symbol comes before a larger one, it’s subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, and CM = 900.

The rules don’t allow a symbol to appear more than three times in a row (4 is IV, not IIII), and subtraction is only allowed with I, X, and C before the next two larger symbols. That’s why 99 is XCIX, not IC. Roman numerals still appear in everyday life, including centuries (the 21st century), chapters, the names of popes and kings (Benedict XVI), clock faces, and movie credits.

Frequently asked questions

How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals?

MMXXVI: MM (2,000) + XX (20) + VI (6).

Why is the limit 3,999?

In traditional notation, M is the largest symbol, and it can't be repeated more than three times. Larger numbers used a bar over a symbol to multiply it by 1,000, but that notation isn't available on a standard keyboard.

Is there a zero in Roman numerals?

No. The Roman numeral system has no symbol for zero or negative numbers.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
