About this tool
To find the area of a rectangular room, multiply width × length: a 13 × 16 ft room is about 208 sq ft. For an L-shaped room, split it into two rectangles and add their areas. When buying flooring, add a waste allowance for cuts and breakage—about 10% for straight layouts and 15% for diagonal layouts or large tiles—and always round up to whole boxes.
To estimate paint, multiply the room’s perimeter × ceiling height to get the wall area, then subtract doors (about 20 sq ft each, 3 × 7 ft) and windows (about 13 sq ft each). Multiply by the number of coats (usually 2 or 3), then divide by the coverage listed on the can—typically 350 to 500 sq ft per gallon per coat for acrylic paint. The can-size recommendation favors larger containers, which often cost less per gallon.
These are estimates. Actual coverage depends on the paint, existing color, primer and surface. Always check the manufacturer’s label, and consult a professional for larger projects.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a room's square footage?
Multiply the width by the length, both measured in feet. A 10 ft × 12 ft bedroom is 120 sq ft. If the room isn't rectangular, divide it into rectangles and add their areas.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
Add 10% to 15% for cuts and breakage. Use 15% or more for diagonal layouts, large porcelain tiles, or rooms with lots of cuts, and save a few tiles for future repairs.
How many gallons of paint do I need for a bedroom?
A 10 × 10 ft bedroom with 9 ft ceilings has about 312 sq ft of wall space, excluding the door and window. With 2 coats and coverage of 350 sq ft per gallon, you’ll need about 2 gallons.
How do I check how much paint I’ll need?
Coverage is listed on the can, in square feet per gallon or per container, per coat. Premium paints often cover more area. New or porous surfaces, or a big color change, may require extra paint or primer.
