HEIC to JPG

Convert HEIC images to JPG in batches without losing quality.

Open tool

What is HEIC, and why does it cause problems?

Since iOS 11, iPhones have saved photos in HEIC (HEIF), which uses about half the space of a JPG at the same quality. The downside is compatibility:

  • Windows only opens HEIC files with extra extensions from the Microsoft Store (HEIF Image Extensions and HEVC Video Extensions).
  • Many government, banking, job application, and shopping websites only accept JPG or PNG for document uploads.
  • Older editing and printing programs may not recognize the format.

Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser

  1. Open HEIC to JPG on your computer or iPhone.
  2. Select one or more .heic photos.
  3. Keep the quality at 90 for a great balance of sharpness and file size, or adjust it if you need a smaller file.
  4. Click Convert to JPG. Multiple photos are downloaded together in a ZIP file.

Your photos are converted on your device, with no upload. Need a lossless background for editing? Use HEIC to PNG. Sending a photo of a document? HEIC to PDF gives you a ready-to-use PDF.

Set your iPhone to take photos in JPG

  1. Open Settings › Camera › Formats.
  2. Choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG (and videos as H.264).

Keep in mind: photos will take up more space, some high-resolution and high-frame-rate video modes require High Efficiency, and existing photos will remain in HEIC.

Another option that doesn’t change your camera settings: under Settings › Photos, find Transfer to Mac or PC and select Automatic. Your iPhone will convert photos to JPG when you copy them over a cable.

Quick tips

  • When you send a photo on WhatsApp as a photo (not as a document), it arrives as a JPG, but it’s compressed.
  • If a website has a file size limit, use Compress image after converting.
  • For Live Photos, only the still image is converted; the video portion isn’t included.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting a photo to JPG reduce its quality?

JPG is a compressed format, but at quality 90, the difference is imperceptible to the naked eye. If you need a lossless image, convert it to PNG, which creates much larger files.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, right on your device.

Will switching to Most Compatible convert older photos?

No. This setting only applies to photos you take after changing it. Older photos need to be converted.
