Number Memory Test

Digit span: repeat number sequences in the order they appear, then backward, and see how many you can remember.

Numbers appear one at a time. Primeiro, na forward order, digite a sequência como apareceu (começa com 3 dígitos). Depois vem a reverse order: digite de trás para frente (começa com 2). Cada tamanho tem 2 chances.

How to use: Number Memory Test

  1. Click Start and pay close attention: the numbers appear one at a time, one per second.
  2. For forward order, enter the sequence as it appeared. Then try backward order: enter it in reverse.
  3. You get 2 attempts for each sequence length. At the end, see the longest sequence you got right in each order and share your results.

About this tool

Forward and backward digit span

This test uses the digit span format, a classic psychology exercise: numbers are spoken or shown one per second in sequences that get longer each time. In forward order, you just remember and repeat them—this uses short-term memory, which typically holds about 7 digits in adults, give or take 2.

In backward order, you have to remember the numbers and rearrange them in your head. This uses working memory, and most people can recall 1 or 2 fewer digits than in forward order. The sequences are generated on the spot; this is just a fun activity, not a neuropsychological assessment.

How this differs from the growing-sequence memory test

In the numbers-and-colors memory test, the same sequence adds one item each time you get it right. Here, each round has a new sequence, plus a backward-order phase—so the results aren't directly comparable.

  • Chunk the numbers: 3-8-1-5-9-2 becomes "381" and "592".
  • For backward order, read the chunks in reverse: "295" and "183".

Frequently asked questions

How many digits is it normal to remember?

Most adults can repeat 5 to 9 digits in forward order, with an average of about 7. In backward order, people typically remember 1 or 2 fewer digits.

How do the 2 attempts work?

If you get a sequence wrong, you’ll get a new one of the same length. Two wrong answers in a row end that round.

Can I type spaces between the numbers?

Yes. Only the digits count, so 3 8 1, 3-8-1, and 381 are all accepted as the same answer.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
