Get the perfect profile photo crop

For profile photos, your face should fill 60% to 70% of the circle, with a little space above your head. Zoom in until your shoulders are only partly visible, then drag the image so your eyes sit just above center. A plain background and good front lighting matter more than the camera.

Colored border

A thin border (2% to 4%) in your brand color makes your photo stand out in contact lists and email signatures with white backgrounds. Thick borders resemble a "Stories" ring and grab attention on invitations and banners.

Doesn't WhatsApp or Instagram already make your profile photo circular?

Yes, they display your photo in a circle, but crop it their own way. Frame it here to choose exactly what shows. A circular photo with a transparent background is useful anywhere photos aren't cropped automatically: email signatures, resumes, name badges, websites, presentations, and video thumbnails.

Why does the background look like a checkerboard?

The checkerboard indicates transparency. In the downloaded PNG, the area outside the circle is transparent and takes on the color of whatever you place the image on. If you need a background, choose "Solid color".

Are my files uploaded to a server?
