About this tool

Where the 35 ml per kg guideline comes from

A commonly used guideline for healthy adults is 30 to 35 ml of water per kg of body weight per day. For someone weighing 70 kg, that's about 2.45 liters. Physical activity increases fluid loss through sweat, so we add 500 ml per hour of exercise. On hot days, you may need about 10% more.

  • Juice, tea, milk, fruit, and soup also contribute to hydration.
  • Light-colored urine without a strong odor is a good sign you're getting enough fluids.

Tips to help you remember to drink water

  • Keep a 500 ml bottle where you can see it and try to finish one in each part of the day: morning, lunchtime, afternoon, and evening.
  • Drink a glass when you wake up and another before each meal.
  • Use the online timer to remind you every hour.
  • If you have kidney or heart failure, or fluid retention, you may need to limit your water intake. Follow your doctor's advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much water should a 70 kg person drink?

About 2.45 liters per day based on the 35 ml per kg guideline, or around 10 cups of 250 ml. On workout days or in hot weather, you may need more than 3 liters.

Can drinking too much water be harmful?

In extreme amounts, yes. Drinking several liters in a short time can lower your blood sodium levels (hyponatremia). Spread your water intake throughout the day, and don't greatly exceed your needs without medical advice.

Do coffee and tea count toward your water intake?

Partly. Tea and coffee contain water and, in moderate amounts, hydrate you almost as well as plain water. Don't rely on soda or alcoholic drinks to meet your goal.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
