How to use: Running Pace Calculator

  1. Choose what you want to calculate: pace, race time, or distance.
  2. Fill in the other two fields (time in mm:ss or h:mm:ss; pace in min:sec per km).
  3. See your result, speed in km/h, and estimated finish times for popular race distances.

About this tool

What pace means and how to calculate it

Pace is how long it takes you to cover 1 km: total time ÷ distance. If you run 10 km in 55 minutes, your pace is 5:30 per km, or 10.9 km/h. To convert pace to speed, divide 60 by your pace in minutes (60 ÷ 5.5 = 10.9 km/h).

Estimated times for longer races

This estimate uses the Peter Riegel formula (1977): T₂ = T₁ × (D₂ ÷ D₁)^1,06. The 1.06 exponent accounts for the natural slowdown over longer distances. The formula works well if you’ve trained for your target distance; for your first marathon, add a 5% to 10% buffer.

  • Use your time from a recent race run at a hard effort as your baseline.
  • Heat, hills, and altitude can increase your actual finish time.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate running pace?

Divide your total time by the distance in kilometers. If you ran 5 km in 30 minutes, your pace is 6:00 per km. The calculator accepts time in mm:ss or h:mm:ss.

What’s a good running pace for beginners?

A pace of 6:30 to 8:00 per km is common for beginners. During easy runs, you should be able to hold a conversation; your pace will improve with consistency.

What pace do I need to run 10K in under an hour?

You’ll need an average pace under 6:00 per km, which is faster than 10 km/h. To finish in 50 minutes, you’ll need to run at a 5:00 per km pace.

Is it really free? Is there a daily limit?

It's free with no daily limits. Processing happens on your device, so there's no per-use cost and no need to limit you.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. The site works in any modern browser on Android, iPhone, Windows, Mac, and Linux—no installation needed.
