PDF Sideways or Upside Down? Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Find out why scanned or photographed pages appear sideways or upside down in a PDF, and how to permanently rotate only the pages that need fixing.

Rotate PDF

Rotate all or just a few pages in a PDF.

Rotating the view won’t fix the file

Almost every PDF reader has a rotate button. The problem is that it only changes the view on your computer. You close the file, send it to someone, and they still see the page sideways. To fix it for good, the rotation has to be saved to the file.

Before fixing it, it helps to understand why it happens so you can avoid the same problem with your next document.

Common causes

  • A photo taken with your phone lying flat. When the camera points down, your phone’s orientation sensor may not know which way is “up” and can save the photo rotated. It may look right in your gallery because the app reads an orientation tag, but a PDF converter might ignore it.
  • Paper placed sideways in the scanner. Landscape pages, such as tables and older certificates, go in upright and come out sideways.
  • A document with mixed page orientations. A contract with a landscape attachment in the middle will have one sideways page among several portrait pages—and that’s normal. You only need to fix it if the content is hard to read in its current position.
  • Both sides scanned in an automatic document feeder. Depending on how the paper was loaded, the backs of the pages may come out upside down.

How to fix it for good

  1. Open Rotate PDF and select your file.
  2. Choose an angle: 90° clockwise, 90° counterclockwise, or 180° for upside-down pages.
  3. In the page field, enter only the pages that need fixing, such as 3 or 2, 4-6. Leave it blank to rotate every page.
  4. Click Rotate PDF and download the file. The rotation is saved, so it will display correctly in any program.

If pages face different directions, it’s easier to use Organize PDF. It shows page thumbnails, each with its own rotate button. Fix pages one at a time as you review them, and reorder or remove any pages you no longer need.

How to tell which way to rotate

To choose between 90° clockwise and counterclockwise, look at the thumbnail and check which way the top of the text is facing:

  • Text is sideways, with the top facing left: rotate 90° clockwise.
  • Text is sideways, with the top facing right: rotate 90° counterclockwise.
  • Text is upside down: rotate 180°.

If you choose the wrong direction, no problem: just rotate the resulting file again. Rotating won’t reduce quality.

How to prevent it next time

  • When photographing documents, use a document scanner instead of your regular camera. The Document Scanner crops the page using all four corners and corrects the perspective, so you can check its orientation before creating the PDF.
  • If you’re using your camera, start with your phone at a slight angle so it can detect the orientation, then line it up over the paper.
  • On a flatbed scanner, always place landscape pages with the top facing the same direction. That makes it easy to rotate them all at once later.
  • Check the PDF before sending it. A sideways document won’t be rejected for that reason, but it can delay the review and look careless.

Does rotating change anything besides the page orientation?

No. The content, image quality, selectable text, and links stay the same. The exception is digitally signed PDFs: rotating one saves changes to the file and invalidates the signature. If a signed document arrived sideways, ask the sender for a new copy or rotate the view just to read it.

Frequently asked questions

I rotated the file in my PDF reader and saved it, but it still opened sideways for someone else. Why?

Some PDF readers don’t save rotations made in the viewer, even when you save the file. Use a tool that saves the rotation to the file, then check it by opening it in another program.

Can I rotate just one page and leave the rest as they are?

Yes. Enter the page number in the page field in Rotate PDF, or click the rotate button on that page’s thumbnail in Organize PDF.

Is a landscape page in a portrait PDF incorrect?

Not necessarily. Tables and floor plans are often in landscape orientation. Rotate the page only if the text is sideways when you read it.

Does it work on phones?

Yes. Both tools work in your phone’s browser, and the corrected file will be saved to your downloads folder.

Does rotating a PDF make the file larger or smaller?

Hardly at all. Rotation is page information; the images and text aren’t recompressed, so the file stays almost the same size as the original.
